Built in the 1950s by legendary city planner Robert Moses, the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) now carries over 153,000 vehicles per day. But 65 years later, a critical 1.5-mile stretch between Atlantic Avenue and Sands Street is deteriorating—prompting urgent conversations among city and state officials about how to rebuild it.
In collaboration with Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), we helped bring their bold reimagining of the BQE to life through a series of aerial animations and still renderings. Unlike the city’s conventional repair plan, BIG’s proposal challenges the very need for the highway’s current form—offering a visionary alternative: rerouting traffic through a tunnel beneath a new public park.
